POSTER GOALS

There are three main goals to follow when designing a poster:

  • Make your poster ATTRACTIVE! It needs to grab the attention of even the most busiest, blindest person.  Your poster needs to visually scream out "LOOK AT ME!"
  • E A S Y - T O - R E A D & Self Explanatory!
  • Organised & EASY TO FOLLOW!  If there's too much crap everywhere what's the point in designing a poster?  Clarify your concept!

While designing my awareness posters, I had these 3 goals stuck on my computer monitor.  Genius!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TEXT & NZ STATISTICS

NZ Statistics

On average 14 women, 7 men and 8 children are killed by a member of their family every year.

On average 9 children under 14 are killed every year in New Zealand by a member(s) of their family. Babies aged less than a year are most at risk of being killed by a family member.

1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence from a partner in their lifetime.

About half of all homicides in New Zealand are family violence.

Police are called to around 200 domestic violence situations a day – that’s one every seven minutes on average.

Police estimate only 18% of domestic violence incidents are reported.

20,000 women and children needed the help of Women’s Refuge in 2013.

EXPERIMENTAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EXAMPLE AND AWARENESS POSTERS

I love this art piece!
Exactly what I wanted to do!

I took the text from one of the 'domestic violence' interviews I done earlier.  I wanted to experiment with black and white and also collage with the background being a piece of lined pad and a sketch I draw.  I used the copy machine to produce this and then took a photo of my work using a copy stand and dslr camera.
PRO:  Image looked quite attention grabbing and effective
CON:  Text could've been better read if in another style.
Digital Experiement: Used PhotoShop.  Experimenting with font, etc.
PRO:  Black and White
CON:  Placement of the text, images added? Too dull for my liking.
Collage Experiment.  One of my first collage experiements using only found images from magazines, my own drawings, etc.
PRO:  Quite suttle and arty.  I enjoyed making this.
CON:  Not effective enough to be an awareness poster.

Digital Experiement via Photoshop - Blank page, used paintbrush tool and wrote over and over "Was it worth it?"

EXAMPLES AND EXPERIMENTAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE AWARENESS POSTERS

EXPERIMENTAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE  AWARENESS POSTERS

This is my first design for a poster made using Adobe Photoshop.

I wanted to use both text and image for this.

In my group critique I was asked why I chose a typewriter and what significance it had.  I chose it because as I was drafting down designs for my alcohol/drug abuse awareness poster I found
Hand designed collage-type experiment using different paper and found images and simple text

Digitally Rendered Design.
Used PhotoShop and found images.

Digitally enhanced beer bottle and text.

With the following meth advertisements I found both images and text to be extremely affective! Gritty, but very real and very true!

I found this via google and I liked how the text was designed in the shape of a beer bottle and sports bottle.
Final Project!
Added hand written words of meaningful responsibilities.

ENGAGEMENT AND INQUIRY (CLASS ACTIVITY)

1.
Do you think your posters are making an impact on society?

2.
Are my posters delivering the message/s I'm trying to portray?

3.
Should I be pushing the controversial boundaries with my work even further?

4.
-Will society accept my work?
-Are my designs very effective? Or weak?
-Too add or not to add quotes/text only?

5.
I want my work to be strong enough to make an impact on society - I want to challenge societal thoughts on these social issues I've chosen.  If I can grab one person's attention then I've achieved my goal for this project.

ATTENTION! ALERT! AWARE!
-A series of posters promoting awareness of social issues.

I’m focussing on key social issues that I have identified such as Child Poverty.

I intend to produce a series of large scaled posters advertising awareness of social issues such as child poverty, domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse using digital design and mixed media.  My resource material comes from a variety of social issues pamphlets and brochures.

A maximum time of six weeks will be needed to produce the posters, as I will need to measure the dimensions of the space I’m able to use to install my posters to and then take the measurements and have them printed to the desired size.

I’m going to display one portrait A1-A2 sized poster (depending on the dimensions of the allowed space), and it’ll be displayed in the front window of the shop nearest to the entrance.  These posters are going to be laminated so I’ll be hanging them using adhesive putty so there will be no damage.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I intend to make a zine and posters that highlight the dark side of our society bringing awareness to and highlighting ongoing issues and problems such as Child Abuse, Domestic Violence and Drug and Alcohol Abuse.
